Belenky et al. (1986) study on women's ways of knowing was as result of lack of information on cognitive developmental studies of women. Perry's (1970) previous work was inspiration for the current study because it focused only on men. While the findings did open up the doors for future research on women's development, it would be possible to find men who fit into each of the five epistemological perspectives (Belenky et al., 1986). Just like women, men need to establish their identity, create relationships with others, and learn to process knowledge, all factors listed for cognitive development.
In this theory there was a strong focus on the dependence of authority which at times felt overwhelming. The research suggested a relation between social class, and the perspective of cognitive development that the participants were in. Often the generalizations made about the participants past could have a different outcome for various individuals. Ultimately it is important to point out that each individual is different could be in a range of each of the perspectives it is ultimately to complicated to fully capture the complexity of each individual.
